Eligibility & Documents Required to Open NRI Savings Account in India

 

Open an NRE/NRO Account, if you meet the following criteria:

 

A ‘Non-resident Indian’ (NRI) is a person resident outside India who is a citizen of India for the purpose of --

 

  • for employment, or
  • for carrying on any business or vocation, or
  • for any other purpose indicating an intention of stay outside India for an uncertain period
  • for education

 

OR

 

A ‘Person of Indian Origin (PIO)’ is a person resident outside India who is a citizen of any country other than Bangladesh or Pakistan, or such other country as may be specified by the Central Government, satisfying the following conditions:

 

  • Who was a citizen of India by virtue of the Constitution of India or the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955); or
  • Who belonged to a territory that became part of India after the 15th day of August, 1947; or
  • Who is a child or a grandchild or a great grandchild of a citizen of India or of a person referred to in clause (a) or (b); or
  • Who is a spouse of foreign origin of a citizen of India or spouse of foreign origin of a person referred to in clause (a) or (b) or (c)

 

Note: A PIO will include an ‘Overseas Citizen of India’ (OCI) cardholder within the meaning of Section 7(A) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. Such an OCI Card holder should also be a person resident outside India..

 

Documents Required for Opening NRI Bank Account

  • Identity proof - Officially Valid Document (OVD) as Indian Passport or Overseas passport with OCI card

    Note: Where the OVD presented by a foreign national (Overseas passport holder) does not contain the details of address, in such case the documents issued by the Government departments of foreign jurisdictions AND letter issued by the Foreign Embassy or Mission in India shall be accepted as proof of address.

  •  

  • Proof for Communication and Permanent/Current Address – (Any One)

    • Indian Passport
    • Overseas Passport and OCI
    • Driving License
    • Proof of Possession of Aadhaar
    • Voter's Identity Card issued by the Election Commission of India
    • Job card issued by NREGA duly signed by an officer of the State Government
    • Letter issued by the National Population Register

 

  • Further, Proof of Overseas address, in case the customer prefers to have his/her deliverables sent across to the address different from the OVD

    • Employment Permit/Resident Permits/National/state ID/Population Card/extract bearing address
    • Tax Certificate/Notice/Challan/Demand/Receipt bearing the address (Document issued by the Govt. dept. of foreign jurisdictions)
    • Voter /Electoral registration card/letter having address
    • Trade/Commercial License issued by Municipal or government body
    • Registered Property/ title deed/Purchase Agreement for own property

      Note: Above document to be submitted along with Annexure.

 

  • Non-Resident status proof – (Any One)

    • Valid Employment Visa/Work Permit/Residence Permit/Card (including e-VISA)
    • US Naturalization Certificate/Advance parole/Employment Authorization Document for Optional Practical Training (OPT) to students
    • Single Entry visa with name of sponsor in GCC country
    • OCI/PIO Card or documents evidencing India connect such as Valid/Expired Indian Passport of Self / Spouse / Parents with relationship proof
    • Letter/certificate issued by Indian Embassy or consulate confirming as PIO/OCI
    • Overseas passport confirming place of birth is “India” for PIO
    • For Seafarer- CDC with the latest disembarkation stamp/C1D visa

 

  • PAN or Form 60*

  • *Note: PAN acknowledgement number is mandatory in Form 60, if Indian income (non-agricultural) is above threshold limit of INR 4 lakhs

 

  • FATCA/CRS Declaration with Tax Identification Number (TIN)/ Functional Equivalent (FE)

 

 

NRI account opening though Non-face-to-face mode,


  • The copy of the documents should be certified by any one of the following authorities:
    • Authorised officials of overseas branches of Scheduled Commercial Banks registered in India
    • Branches of overseas banks with whom Indian banks have relationships.
    • Notary Public abroad,
    • Court Magistrate,
    • Judge,
    • Indian Embassy/Consulate General in the country where the non-resident customer resides.

 

  • PAN is mandatory for opening NRI account through non-face-to-face mode

 

  • First credit in account should be received from existing overseas bank account of the customer through:

    • Inward remittance from overseas to India 
    • Foreign Currency Cheque

Documents for DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) Benefits:

To avail DTAA benefits, submit physical copies of the following:


  • Self Declaration
  • Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) (Original or certified true copy) for the applicable financial year
  • Form 10F
  • Self-attested PAN Card (not required if PAN is already updated in the account)

Submission: Documents can be submitted at any ICICI Bank branch in India.
